6-week Course Outline
During this 6-week Summer Success course, students will work on phonics and phonemic awareness as well as comprehension skills. The focus skills selected have been carefully selected with the purpose of helping establish a strong foundation for the upcoming school year. Each week will focus on a different syllable type in addition to a specific comprehension skill. During each session, the students will also complete a brief creative writing piece to work on developing appropriate paragraph structure within their written work. The course outline below details the specific concepts that will be practiced during this course.
Week 1
Summarize - Students will practice summarizing what they read verbally and in writing.
Week 2
Restate & Answer Questions - Students will practice restating and answering questions about a text in complete sentences.
Week 3
Restate & Answer Questions - Students will practice restating and answering questions about a text in complete sentences.
Week 4
Main Idea & Supporting Details - Students will practice identifying the main idea of a given text and locating details in the text to prove it.
Week 5
Main Idea & Supporting Details - Students will practice identifying the main idea of a given text and locating details in the text to prove it.
Week 6
Author’s Purpose - Students will practice identifying the author’s purpose for writing a given piece.
